THE BUSHWICK ART MART
For those of you who don’t know, skewville was an actual place. It was first inhabited by Ad & twin brother, Droo, circa 1996. Skewville was coined originally for its warped structure as well as their crooked sense. In some circles, the word “Skewville” now stands for a specific style or even places beyond the original structure.
Why were you interested in participating in The Putting Lot? Does it relate to work you’ve done in the past?
Being a resident of Bushwick I am excited to see something like this happening in the neighborhood and wanted to be a part of it. I also work in Bushwick as an Artist, My workshop is in the basement of Factory Fresh, an art gallery, that me and my partner run. So, living and working in Bushwick leaves only thing left to do, play.
What is the inspiration for your design? How does it relate to urban sustainability?
My Idea is to incorporate the corner bodega into the landscape of the putting lot. But not just any bodega, one that showcases various types of street art. The Bodegas are the staples in many urban communities, but with the bad economy more and more stores and factories are going out of business. The concept of this Art Bodega is that art is very vital to this new community of artists and galleries and that the only way for this area to sustain is to support the arts. .
What else would you like to see in an empty space in the city?
Anything but condos
Do you have any childhood memories or good stories about miniature golf?
We used to play mini golf in a parking lot near our house, we used found objects and parked cars as obstacles. So this putting lot brings us back to the good old days.
What do you hope to see at The Putting Lot this summer?
un had by all. and maybe some beer.
